Check this puppy out! http://www.barnstormers.com/eFLYER/2007/070600eFLYER.html

Lots & lots of custom machining, welding and fabricating for sure. So far this is the only info I could find on it but I'd love to see more pictures & details.

I wonder what that engine/engines combo sounds like?

Those props would generate a sound of their own also.

Interesting project.

Yup, we know what a couple hot big blocks sound like. If I recall correctly, the reason GE/NASA stopped working on the unducted fan for commercial use was the unbearable racket they made. Just no way to get around it.

Now, imagine 16 growling, bellowing American big bore cylinders complemented by a couple of unbelievably loud counter-rotating noisemakers and you'll have quite a cacaphony.

I s'pect that's why the pilot's office is way back in the arse end!;)

While in Russia, working near an air force base, got to see and HEAR the Tupolev tu-95 "Bear" bomber, with 4 turbo-prop engines, with contra-rotating propellers. I have never heard anything louder than that plane, the shear prop noise and vibration can't be properly discribed, you have to experience it in person.

I have read that the Bear is so loud that a pilot in another aircraft can hear it when they are anywhere near one.
