in Sir Johns thread on Engracing Malc noted where he had been on holiday in wales. Quote

My wife and I have just had a weeks holiday staying at Porthmadog in North Wales, stayed in a very nice appartment almost next door to the Ffestiniog Railway station. We took a ride to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the observation car of the train which was hauled by one of the double Fairlie locomotives, similar to the one in Mark's post. We also had a ride on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Ryhd Ddu and back. The locomotive on this journey was on of the ex South African Railways class NGG16 Beyer-Garratt 2-6-2 + 2-6-2 articulated locos, the biggest and most powerful 2 foot gauge steam locomotives ever built. We also visited and rode on the Tal-y-llyn Railway, which differs from most of the Welsh narrow gauge railways in being built to a gauge of 2' 3" instead of 2'.
I can recommend to any lovers of real ale, Spooner's Bar, on the platform at Porthmadog station,

Malc.

We also stayed in Cricceth last week just up the cost from Porthmadog and went to the same three railways.

Some pictures, if this works just set up the bucket account for first attempt

The wife and I thought that it was incredible that we have both been on such similar holidays last week.

NICE PICS MALC ..

A pic of the loco shed/workshops of the Snowdon Mountain Railway ...before we entered and had a good look around on Friday.

More pics from Steve Thomas when he returns to the USA ...in PM

so watch out for his posts

note the tracks have racks ....the locos drive through a sprocket.

Rode the Ffestiniog railway yeasterday........for any UK guys reading this ...the best way to do this is to book a ticket from a station on the North Wales coast right though to Porthmadoc...one return ticket covers about 140 miles of train rides for twenty quid. (from prestatyn)........and transfer at Llandudno Junction ...to a ride down the Conway valley ...single track line encountering beautiful scenery ...on conventional tran...about 1 hour....advanced knowlege of conection times required as train only runs every two hours .

Then onto steam train at Blanueu Ffestiniog ...for 45min ride each way to porthmadoc....again fantastic views .

Twenty pounds and 80 pence covers the whole lot

Got to be about the best twenty quid you will ever spend.

We also visited the loco workshops at Llangollen on Wednesday....Lots of interesting stuff going on there ...and plenty pics taken.

all the best.mark
