Has anybody tried guilloché turning? It's done on a rose engine, a type of lathe which hasn't been made commercially for years.
From the videos shown here http://www.rgmwatches.com/engine.html it appears that rose engine lathes turn at about 0.2 RPM. If you want to make such a lathe, http://home.vicnet.net.au/~pwguild/o-rosego.htm tells you how.
[edit] I should have searched the Archives. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=24226 is one of several threads on this topic.

Allan,
Here is a link to the Ornamental Turners International web site, you might find some more info there.

Mark,
That's an inspirational video, gives me ideas about what can be done with my hunks of hard mesquite.

Allan,
I have always wanted to go this way but there is only one lifetime.
However, there are quite a number of books on Ornamental Turning. I think the classic is by Holzappfell and although old- very- has gone to several reprints. I have the four volumes but I suspect that there is another one.
Again, 'Tom Walshaw writing as Tubal Cain did one more recently and used his Myford lathe as well as more fancy stuff.
Rambling on, I recall several articles from the Society of Ornamental Turners in the UK and CNC is quite possible. It was written up in MEW some time back.
Earlier, again in MEW, was how to make an elliptical chuck. Sounds tasty?
So you can now start on making your Eiffell Tower on the lathe- or not.
Good luck
Norm

That would fit right in with all the other things I like to do like watching paint dry, grass grow And gw do something positive for the world...:p

Hey Alan, one of our local guys right here in the Valley is into Rose Engines and has several. I even got to run it for a bit. They are much faster than 0.2 rpm, but not fast like a regular lathe. They also generally use a powered head that does most of the cutting work, so unlike normal turning, it doesn't take hundreds and thousands of rotations to accomplish something. It actually goes rather fast.
