Any time I get a redirect to a .cn top level domain (China) I cut the connection. That was the case with the list you provided.

Thanks dp.---------The Digital Library of India. I was dubious of it but that is more instinct based than rational . Nice idea though:) .

Did they supply you any .exe files, like a reader, Alistair? If the site isn't legit, it could be a way to infect your machine with a virus.

Regarding a free lunch, a lot of older books can be scanned and posted as all the copyrights have expired. See Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page).

I poked at it a bit. It appears that a reader IS required to view the data, and it appears to be this:

http://djvu.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DjVu
http://djvu.sourceforge.net/

I had my virus scanner on alert, and the page itself doesn't try to install anything.

So, in short, despite my great annoyance at them not using something ubiquitous, like PDF, this site isn't setting off any of my warning bells.

But take that with a grain of salt. If anything happens to my comp, I'll let you guys know.:)

EDIT: I'm downloading the manual installer (FireFox user) for DjVu now.

All the books seem to be stored on a server in China:

From the whois record:

whois 210.32.0.139
descr: Zhejiang University (merged former Zhejiang Medical University)
descr: Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310027, China

And a google search gives us this:

I use dr. Webb a fire fox add on that allows you to scan for viruses before you
enter a unknown web site or before you download something it saved me a few times.
