I think a recent usage of the term was actually referring to a thread dial. They let you to know when your spindle and lead screw are correctly set to retrace an existing cut. It allows you to recut the same path (thread) until the desired depth is reached.

A thread counter (spindle counter) would tell you how many turns the spindle has made since a triggering event and hence the number of threads being cut. Using CNC might change all this - I don't know, haven't messed with CNC.

I'm a big believer in speaking up and appearing the fool rather than remaining quiet and removing all doubt. Generally when you are wrong about something you will be well informed of your error, so let's see how wrong I was. :D
