I posted a while back about how I was amazed how most lathe dogs will not reach the drive plates. Many responded and I looked over several dogs users have made as well as seeing some on the web.
I decided to make a set and go a step further and get it real balanced as many I tried were real bad and would wobble my light lathe into a stooper.

Here is my latest

The bolt you see is the balance bolt. The slot you see is for the drive pin which is also adjustable to mate with most any application.

I painted it this way,,No not because it is Halloween, but because this is much larger than the normal dog, (sorry Rover!) and I found myself getting a bit closer to things while spinning. This way there is no excuse to hit anything, including me

I made the legs the same size, added a counter balance hole to mount a bolt and washers to do a final balance when ready to run. This worked real well and I found you can balance it to turn 650+ rpms on my lathe with no wobble.
I had a problem in the past getting needed finishes due to low rpm because of out of balance conditions.

I tapped it for 5/16 18 cap head screw to lock it down to the work and you now have a highly visible, balanced dog.

Please do not go and paint your dogs this color. :D
