It's been a long time since I've messed with ANY of this stuff. I've got some little chits across the street messin with my stuff. I want to set up a BASIC (one camera) survelliance system.

Can anyone suggest a DECENT small camera? Back when I used to play with cameras, a camera was a camera was a camera....now I've gotta contend with resolution and crap.

Distance is about 50 feet, poor lighting at night, so I will need a low light camera.

Anybody used any of the USB recorders that are available? Or should I just stick with my VCR.

A good old VCR and a camera like this will work.

Casinos still use the good old VCR's for stuff like that.

Harbor Freight sells inexpensive camera/monitor sets. You can hook them up to a motion sensor and a video recorder. Have fun and persecute, I mean prosecute them to the fullest. Don't use the first video, get several infractions if you can.

Don't expect a camera with a 12 LED infrared illuminator to light up anything beyond a few meters. They don't. To provide sufficient illumination to see any respectable distance at night takes a much more powerfull illuminator, something like 100 LEDs or more. Or, a single 50 watt halogen flood light works very well.

I have several cameras right now. Two are wireless 1 lux NTSC video with infrared illuminators built in.

This camera is set up in the trees where it can observe the cul-de-sac at the end of our road. It is nearly dark and in a few more minutes nothing will be visible except the closer tree trunks. The light mark on the further tree trunk is some retro-reflective paint I put on it as a night time reference. Our interest on that cam is to watch for people who park to check out the activity level. As I am awake a good part of the night I keep an eye on it and turn on the 2000 watts of floods if someone parks. It filters through the trees enough that they know somebody is awake. We have scared off two in the last month.

This camera overlooks the driveway. I have a single 50 watt halogen flood that is on all night controlled by a photocell switch. I tried various light sources and this is the best. The camera is sensitive to infrared and a halogen bulb is very rich in IR.

I don't recommend wireless cameras unless you live in a very rural area. They are very subject to interference.

If you want a camera that can take a clear enough picture to positively identify sombody then you will have to spend some real coin. To take a picture good enough to ID past a few yards requires a high definition system. The inherent resolution of a standard TV camera is less than the very lowest computer screen resolution.

I got the HF cameras all the way around my place. at 50 feet, you better recognize the perp..

Using mepis Linux free, video4 board off ebay @ $25.. Motion software. free. any rca input camera can link in. Vid board only likes to look at one camera at a time thou.

I worked on some software for WIndows, in Visual basic, it scanned using the same laser line detection subroutine my other scanner program did. I never finished it. Too many unfinished jobs around here.

I don't believe in violating someones assumption that they have privacy when they are simply scouting out a target. We have a small moat around the perimeter filled with large crocodiles. The small environment makes the crocs appear larger then they really are. It's actually a pretty comforting system on Halloween night :D

I've always wanted to wire up the place with flash-bangs and trip wires. Tends to give away the location of the sneaks not to mention the subsequent brown smell. Problem is that we have a lot of resident deer.

After tackling the arsonist who burned a trailer in Rossville Ga, He slid on his face on the asphalt, I was on his back riding him like a sled. I laid him in the gravel driveway face down and would not let him talk to anyone till the law got there. I refused to allow the ambulance techs to treat him or take him out of my custody. His eyebrow was torn loose, along with his eyelid and hanging down on his cheek, looked like a horror movie.

We didn't have anything stolen while living there.

I am fat, older, sicker now. I don't know if I'd try to run them down, or just shoot them and let them slide into a ditch. I remember getting interrogated by the police for two hours on that ordeal. I guess they thought he'd die. Poor perp. I told him to stop. His choice was to run.

A camera system, put some burned out ones highly visible, you won't have problems. WE put a shot glass and a blinking led into a mailbox at a friends skating rink, no more drug dealing on the parking lot, no more people picking up teen girls there.

Look into Huntiung style digital cameras. You can set them up anywhere. I used some at my place to find out who was ripping me off. They work well and are reasonably priced and simple to install.

A second vote for game cameras.I set up two awhile back after some stuff got stolen from me,one by each driveway I couldn't see.

I checked them once a week to see if anything interesting was on them. There was,the nieghbor's newly licensed son was parked in the drive with a Gurl.Since my back drive is far and away from his I figured he needed to do some explaining:D

I called his mom and told her and she told him out of the clear blue the next day-"oh,BTW,Mr.Darin said stop blocking his drive at night":D

I know the guy who owns it and have done a number of custom modifications for him.
He has lots of neat stuff, although it can be a bit pricey.

My system was hacked, probably by a noname lurker off one of these boards.

I am looking for a stand alone system. I prefer the style with a hard drive. Any clues?
Closed loop tape? what's up?

and any comments on the ebay auction? I am no expert and wouldn't mind advice or ?? I am just another geek with too many tools. My neighborhood has gotten worse and worse. I tote a gun. PLUS I want that America's Funniest Home videos prize. Put up a six foot chain link fence and it just screams to the lowlifes you got something to steal. Not that you got a pitt bulldog who can jump five+ feet straight up. (Butch could jump six)

I gotta get the harley off the porch, with the old flamed painted car, the harley, it looks like Bill gates lives here, nahh he'd have a big enough garage?
