View Full Version : Emco FB-2 Adapter

Hello;
I was wondering if anyone had built or considered building an adapter table for the FB-2 milling head for the Super 11? The factory model tables are either non-existent or priced out of reason. I noticed that Grizzly and other suppliers have X-Y tables that you can buy separately, but the FB-2 would have to be bolted to an adaptor that was stout enough to support it vertically as well as in perfect alignment with the horizontal table used.

Hello Nick;
Yes, like that, only I can't see any of your handiwork.....would it be too much trouble to post a disassembled picture of only the milling head and base, then comment on the x-y table you used? Thanks in advance.

Can't give any shots in bits as I just built it without taking photos but I can give you an idea how it fits together, it's a mixture of good luck scavenging, having the right tools around when I needed them and knowing a good new & used engineering equipment supplier.

I found several feet of this one day whilst scavenging the local scrap dealer's Aluminium corner -

I didn't have a plan for it at the time but it sure looked handy for something!
A few months later I found the milling head & column in a crate at the back of the engineering shop's store and bought it planning to fit it at the back of my Myford Super 7's bed like an Emco, when I got it home it was too big & way too good for that so I looked around & saw the ally t-section.
Bored a hole to let the column drop in -
(you can see the collar retaining bolts in this shot too, along with some of the DRO fittings)

Made a spilt s/s collar to clamp tight on the column

Made & fitted rear & front plates for the base, this is the front, rear is the same, screws are M12 X 75

This is the first table I used, mounted on my huge floor standing Mill Drill that I did the work on, it's really a coordinate drilling table and is too tall with too narrow ways for serious milling, but it was a start -

The new table is half the height with ways almost twice as wide, can't find any more info than this,

I trammed the table to the column, shimming under the table to get it within .001" over 200mm on a square clamped to the table, then trammed the head to the table.
It's a metric table with 4mm pitch screws, adjustable twin ball races at the handles and 300 X 300 approximate travel.

This is the new primary driven gear I made on the FB-2

with it running the first gear I made for it on the Mill Drill.

And here I'm making use of the Y travel to allow high speed work with a RotoZip mounted in front of the head on an adaptor plate

On that shot you can also see the Siemens Micromaster Inverter VFD which drives the 3 phase motor.

I'm planning sides & cross bracing for the base but I'm not having rigidity problems yet, even with the occasional setup that's cutting a foot above the table,

Hi Nick.

Don't want to hi-jack this thread.

Can you tell me what the material is that you are cutting those gears from in the first pic. please?

I notice that the title says "Tufnol" which is as I recall it (at long last!!) - is this still the case?

I have been looking for that or a board very similar to that for a long time. I could not remember its name until I saw your post and pic.

If it is what I hope it is, it is used for mounting/backing boards in electrical switch boards and is a good electrical insulator as well as very machinable, does not delaminate and can be brought up to a good polished finish. It made very serviceable gears as well.

Manufacturer/source details will be appreciated as well as I can then start to chase it in Australia or import a bit of it if needs be.

Try an ebay search for Tufnol, that's where I picked this lot up, I got some nice round section for knife grips too,
