View Full Version : Can anyone identify the finish on this wire end ?

This is a 1" long, 0.026" diameter ground wire for an oscilloscope probe. It appears to be bright finished stainless wire that has been sheared off on both ends. The end finish, however, has a very fine, polished appearance. Can anyone identify the finishing method (based on only the image, of course)? Is this an example of electropolishing? Den

I would expect silver plate.

Electropolishing is a pretty simple process. I've been meaning to try it on aluminum. All you need is 85% phosphoric acid, a bit of battery acid and some plumbing antifreeze. The phosphoric acid can be bought at a greenhouse supplier, used for adjusting pH in growing solutions.
