So I finally decided to repair my mailbox post that has been hit by the snow plow. I made a new post from treated wood. Made it in my shop and transported it down to the end of my driveway with post hole digger and most of my tools and some screws in the bucket of my tractor. I installed the post and set the mailbox in place. Neighbor kid who is about 3-4 years old is peering out behind a shed while I'm working about 10 feet away. Oh No! forgot the cordless drill. Packed up everything except the box of screws which I set on the mail box post. Came back to install the screws...no screws. The mother and little boy were out on their porch so I walked up to them and asked the little boy if he saw the screws I left on the mailbox post and if he had them. Of course the answer was no. Mother said...if you took the screws you better give them back. Still answer is no. Rather than cause a scene and tell her her little boy is not telling the truth and he is a theif, I decided to walk away. $3 box of screws wasn't worth the aggrevation of PO'd neighbors. The mother has not called or said anything further.
So here is the rest of the story, their older son in his late teens has been arrested and in trouble for drugs, alcohol and theft. I found a 12 pak of empties in the hedge row of my drive way on the same outing, but couldn't prove who left them...not my brand , besides I recycle. They have been OK neighbors mainly because my drive way is 1/10 mile long and we have little contact. I'm thinking of reopening the negotiations about the box of screws. Thinking that maybe the kid would be scared into admitting he took them.
So, what do you think? Let it go or run with it? Of course my initial inclination when I was PO'd was to give them a few extra screws in their tires...but I ain't that kinda guy
