Totally blind wood and metalworker and musical instrument maker in training hoping someone could assist me at all. I am looking for a metal turning lathe in good order. anything considered. any age or condition. ideally single phase but 3 phase would be great with ability to convert it. must be 18 to 22 inch between centres and have chuck etc. also looking for any metalworking tools including hand tools etc, brazing kit (oxy propane or acetylene) any age etc. if you could help then please contact me. sadly due to financial position unable to afford hence asking for donation of any tooling or a lathe regardless of age etc. I am genuinely asking for your help. thanks

I had a ebay ad for motorcycle transmission..

A preacher up in Tennessee called me.. He wanted me to donate the transmission to his church, said he was working with some underprivilidged kids building a bike.

After looking him up on the net, I found out he had a long history with his local police force, been arrested several times. Preacher my butt..

I get phone calls collecting for the sherriff's department and fire departments too.. from other states!! They won't take no for a answer. Some SOB sitting in a motel room calling people and collecting money. According to my neighborhood watch commander, most phone solicitations are frauds. They do mailings locally.. your neighborhood may differ..

I hate cons..

Alistair,
nowadays, who do you trust? The planet is infected with con men & scam artists, This makes it very difficult to differentiate the good guys from the bad guys, Sadly i have came across stinkers ,even in amongst the home workshop/ model engineering fraternity, Over the years, this has made me more hard hearted, For the greater part of my life, i was too soft hearted, helping everyone, and kindness became a land of " you will do this for me,NOW! and no appreciation shown, in a lot of cases not even a word of thanks" So now i pick my deserving cases a bit more carefully, I thought our blind craftsman is asking for a cornucopia of goodies, and being a little presumptious Brazing gear when you have no sight hmmmm ? Still i believe if you help somebody as you go along your living will not be in vain. Maybe some of our members in Wales might know someone who knows of the background of the man if google etc doesnt pick him up Just be cautious & dont let your heart over-rule caution guys

We could be seeing evolution in progress. For goodness sakes, someone get him some welding equipment before he has the opportunity to reproduce.

"BLIND" may not mean "totally unable to see" there are various degreews of blindness that all can fit within that term. I worked with a guy whos son was classified as blind because he had such a narrow field of vision that he could not see an entire page of a book and would have to scan back and forth just to read a line of text. Think a field of view about 3 keys wide on your keyboard. Or someone with macular Degeneration - can't read the text on a page at all but can see to drive a car. macular Degeneration damages the central portion of their vision but the peripery of their vision is still good.

This individual may have good enough vision to work under "hobby" like conditions but can't see well enough to work a "normal" job. OR they could be a moocher who is trying to get something for nothing. If they are not a moocher they may have a real talent, but because of vision problems they might not have teh financial wherewithall to be able to afford much more than the basics. If this individual is local you might want to check them out and see if they are for real.

I Am Not Scamming For A Mac.
Hello

I am deeply offended by those who have posted their replies relating to this post. never have I been accused of scamming.

I hope that one day someone comes to realise what its like to lose one's sight at a young age. I'm 23 and I became totally blind at the age of 15. I rely totally on the mac for everything, from my studies, daily tasks and more. it just proves that in this world there are some cruel and nasty people on here

I asked for help in good faith that I would not get vicious and evil people doing this. I am totally genuine

if you can't understand what blindness is like. lock yourself in a room that is totally blacked out. no lighting. nothing. then try navigating your way around it. you wont be able to light track. you'll be feeling your way, listening to changes in acoustic frequencies and even some levels of scent. then come back and tell me what its like. then think of it as permanent. thats what its like for me.

may god forgive those who have done this.

so to re itterate this message. I am desperately in urgent need of a replacement g3 mac such as a slot loading mac or G3 blue and white or G4 blue and white. these models will deliver more power and take the components of my G3 266 memory and drive configs etc. my screen reader relies on OS 9.2.2, braille display and embosser rely on USB along with the scanner. and these tools together are the center of my adaptive life. I have to use braille all the time as well as speech.

so if someone is genuine enough to help me then please do contact me.

OKAY: he knows how to work a crowd.. first offended so you are on the defensive, then works on the pity, then moves on to make you feel bad about not helping him. Invoking God's name helps with the image presented.

Did you realize the BUMS you see on the sides of the interstate make sometimes $2,000 a day in collections. THE ones who sometimes take their children with them for pity's sake.. OMG.. did you see that lil child dressed in rags?

Right up there with a tick I pulled off the dog the other day.

All what he says may be true.. As sharp as he is thou he can earn a decent living as well as anyone here. He just is taking what if freely giving, providing a service, it makes you feel good to give, so give.. Little do you know that your items will end up on craigslist or a pawn shop.
My neighbor used to sell his artificial leg when he'd get a new one, and his wheelchair, and other things gave to him for his disability.. the people who purchased it were more deserving, but knew less how to aqquire the state's giveaways.

The panhandlers in Chattanooga are getting a $50 fine everytime they are caught.. but keep going back to the same place.. what does that tell you? the state is making money, they are making money.. hurrah..

If he wanted help, perhaps he might have made a more extensive explanation of his situation. I am of the belief that giving a lathe, milling mahine and oxy-acetylene equipment to a blind peron is not necessarily helping them. In fact, should they injure themselves attempting to use such equipment, the giver might be held negligent in Court by the injured parties.

He didn't say "legally blind", "partially blind", "somewhat blind" or "lacking peripheral vision". He said "totally blind". Blind is blind and that's that. He also did not say that he was intending to resell the equipment. He gave the impression that he was going to use it. That's not good.

If I had a surplus lathe and someone needed it for a charitable purpose or for teachng at a school that had no budget, I would certainly consider it. But in a situation such as this where my gift could result in an injury, I would decline.

Ticks are higher up on the evolutionary scale, they are what they are, there's no deceit or pretending, I did see an interview with a guy who was a panhandler -- he was living in a million dollar mansion, I dont care how bad off those guys look, even if its for real than there's a good chance the money will just go for a temporary escape (booze/drugs) Theres better ways of getting you belly fed if thats whats needed, I remember having to work out of town running heavy equipment, everyday me and the boys would go through a larger town to get back home and have to stop at the same old intersection with a stop light, Panhandlers were there almost every day ----- they never got a dime, One day I pull up --- here's these two college kids (it was spring break) They were dressed far better than anything I own, One had a sign that said "need money for beer" the other that was standing behind him had a sign that said "me too" We laughed out asses off --- I rolled down the window and handed the guy a couple bucks and said "I appreciate the honesty" :)

JOHNNY in Orlando... he hit a lottery.. had a few bucks..

He stopped at a guy who had a sign saying he would work for food.. gave him a $20, told him it was his job to wave at everycar that came by.. he had seen him around town and would know.. We'd come back through in my van or car and check..

Sure enough, that bum was waving at every car.. I laughed all the way home.. Johnny was a cigar salesman for the casinos in Las Vegas at one time.. If you get my drift.. He had a presence about him. The bum was waving..

I lost track of him.. he had the most beautiful lil daughter about 5ish.. she was in commericals.. she'd be about 23 now.. He got his back crushed by a cargo container loader.. Johnny knowing how much I liked redheads, I came in on the bike, he said.. I got something for you.. there was two twentyish beautiful redheaded girls sitting in the hot tub awaiting me. Doublemint twin girls from some commericals. BUBBLE brained, but beautiful.. and no.. I didn't get a nasty night of sex.. just a hot tub soaking..

Johnny was a good guy.

After peaking around the links aboard_epsilon posted.

Ok no one's heard of this multi talents bloke who after being beaten by a gang at 15 that lead to his blindness. Then gets into a prestigious music school and leans to compose for piano... cause music is him passion. Then a mate musician of his inherits some pipes but know not what they are brings them to bloke who learns to play them in less then a week... mate takes pipe never to be seen again. Or is he a blind bloke that has been turning wood since 16yrs. old making pipes and brazing with a O/A torch. Don't get me wrong people can do amazing things. But I think this blokes talent is in BSing the kindness of others by spinning a sad tail.

(my thoughts) He's a user... always looking for a handout... bet he read Oliver Twist as a youngster.

His ads state that he's totally blind. If as you say, he's only partially blind, then his requests are completely disingenuous and designed only to foster sympathy and increase the "take".

Is that where "getting ("it"??) off (or is that "having it off?) scot- free" was derived from?

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scot-free

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=scot+free+meaning&meta=&aq=0&oq=scot+free

Perhaps give some more?? ("poor"??) sheep a work-out as well. The lanolin will assist as well as keeping your hands soft and free of blisters in the process - I'm told.

We have a guy in the Grand Rapids area that has a spot at the end of a busy expressway offramp where he stands with a sign. Something like "homeless vet, please help". I've got to chuckle. Last time I saw him in his spot, he was talking on a cell phone, smoking a cigarette with a coke and a bag of chips at his feet. Our local newspaper interviewed him. Still there. Some people have no shame. Or maybe they are smarter than I am.

On another corner out of town we had a man, probably in his 60's, standing within sight of a few churches on sunday mornings with a sign "will work for food". My younger brother stopped and told him he didn't have any extra cash but he lived nearby and could bring him a bag of grocerys. The man told him what he really needed was cash. Little bro told me he strongly suspected that the shiny Mercedes parked nearby was the beggar mans.

I suspect that begging has been around since the beginning of time but it concerns me that it does seem to be on the rise from what I can see.:(

I was driving through Detroit on the way home from the N.A.M.E.S. show in April. There was a young man standing on the corner with a sign

'Why lie, I need beer money"

At least he was honest about it.

Here are my three stories:
1. I had some cameras for sale, including a 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 sheet film camera. Some guy shows up and his eyes light up and he tries to talk me down because he wants it for "the boys club" where he helps the kids with photo projects. I smell something because this camera is not what I'd buy for that use. I decided I wasn't going to sell it to this guy because he was just too whiny and his story felt bogus. When I went to the camera collectors swap meet two weeks later, there he was with his booth full of old cameras for sale.

2. I had a 5th wheel hitch for sale. A guy calls and says he wants it for his pastor, who is short of funds and in need. As he tries to talk me down, he slips and says "I usually only pay $60 for those." Usually?? So he buys them all the time? I should have asked him for the pastor's name and church just to see how he'd try to dodge that.

3. My wife's church helped some folks who appeared on their doorstep but after a short while it was apparent that these folks were not interested in helping themselves. It turns out that they were professional mooches who would hit up a church until they got booted and then just move on to the next church.

In journalism there is an old saying, "If your mother says she loves you, check it out."

This is particularly important in the age of the internet. A lot of the political accusations people forward are just not true.
