I hope this means a turn around for the quality of my favorite magazine.

I fear it will be short lived though, like usual.

I suspect they are limited by what shows up in the mail and what is practical to pay for it !!

I'll have to get to Borders and have a look based on your findings. I'd subscribe but that would be the kiss of death for me. Everytime I do that I loose interest and also note some of the themes being regurgitated like in woodworking mags.

Thank you to our families of soldiers, many of whom have given so much more then the rest of us for the Freedom we enjoy.

I've got several articles that I'd like to submit to HSM, but there was a comment here from one of the authors that threw me: is it correct that Village Press won't publish an article if you post the pictures and or a description here (or on your web page)?

            Neil or George?

By the way, I got my issue in the mail yesterday and I concur -- it is a great issue! The steam engine especially.

Yeah, the custom head stock with a Clausing spindle and custom tail stock look very nice. That's some serious work he did to that machine!

                  YOD,

You are correct in that the content of the magazine is entirely dependent on what is sent to us. We have a fairly full catalog of articles, but many have poor pictures, drawings or both. We do make an attempt to keep everyone happy, not that it will ever happen!

                  Lazlo,

I have not seen the post you refer to. You certainly can use your pictures in any way you choose. The author maintains the right to the text, drawings, and any photos in the article. Village Press simply buys the rights for a one time use. We retain the rights to the formatting of the article (basically the work the graphic artist did) while the author is free to do what he wishes, as long as he does not use the actual layout of the article that we built.

I have no problems with you discussing any upcoming articles on the site. Of course, I would prefer that you don?t post the entire article before it is published and I am sure that you have no intensions of doing that. If you have any more questions, drop me a line via email. I?ll try to remember to send you an author?s guide when I get back to the office on Monday.

Thanks George! I sent an email to the Village Press contact email earlier today requesting the author kit.

The post (from JT maybe?) indicated that Village Press was less likely to accept an article if parts of it had already been posted here or on a web page. I can understand that, but then it leaves me in a funny position -- I can write the article and send the package to Village Press and wait a couple of months, and if the article doesn't get picked up then post here...

I can pretty much tell when I first see an article whether it will make into the magazine or not. What I can't tell you is the timing of publication. We are already scheduling the magazine for next year, so things do take awhile to work their way through the system.

I always respond to an author's submittal, and if I say we will use it, we will get it into the magazine, eventually. If you are ever wondering what is going on with any of your submittals, drop me a line and I'll get right back to you.

I believe I viewed your magazine today at the TADL, since you live in TC, I am sure you understand the reference.

I'll be subscribing in starting in August. I like to spread my renewals across the months.

Mr. Ford of Frets . com has enough good material to fill HSM for several years. What ever happened to Terry Sexton, I enjoyed his writing. Stephen Thomas and Harry Bloom are also excellent, and of course Forest who stopped writing to concentrate on his porn career.
