i was thinking of making a oil candle,( thanks for the idea whoever it was that posted the idea first.) i want to make it out of stainless since i have a 2 1/4 peace of 416. the question is how hot do i have to get it to turn purple and can i do it in a house hold oven?

For ordinary steel, that would be about 550 degrees F...more or less. Whether that would apply to stainless 416, I don't know.

Do a Google on "Tempering colors" for some charts.

that would mean getting a whole new bunch of tools to grind the carbide buttons to rifle a barrel blank, a deep hold drill and a heat treat oven. maybe i'll just keep getting the barrels from shilen or hart lol
