    Finished Ring Roller

I just finished the ring roller by Otto Bacon in the Machinist Workshop Vol.20, #6 issue. Its something i've wanted to make for some time now, and finally did it, plus i wanted to make the armillary sphere. A few things to note, i had to make my own pillow blocks and i couldn't come across the wrist pins he used for the shafts, so i made my own. Its got 2" rollers, 1" shafts 1" bearings. The adjustment bolts i welded in place instead of having them float. I used a heavier base because i already had it on hand and. On the flat of the channel, its 1/2" thick, so this thing has got some weight to it. Check the link for the pics. And it works just great.

Very nice. I like the way you went to the trouble of fabricating the chain/sprocket cover. Looks very professional.

      Very nice indeed!

You demonstrated admirable patience and restraint in doing a very nice paint job before putting it to work.

Please show us some pics of the finished work when you get around to it.

Nice!! I especially like the way you incorporated the reduction drive with the handle and sprocket at the end of the roller. That really makes it look good and saves some space, too.

Does the shaft go all the way through, or is the sprocket on a bushing/bearing at the end of the roller shaft?

If you mean the one with the handle, the sprocket is welded onto a bushing and then welded those to the handle. And it slips onto the shaft, and is bolted on.

Yeah...me too...more "samples" than "examples" really....I need you to roll me a mounting band for an argon bottle on my newly constructed welding cart

Seriously though, that is very nice work. I see you stuck a flag sticker. You should also sign it or at least stamp your name on it. I buy some shop-made tooling every once in a while. I actually like knowing the name of the guy who made it...even if that person is no longer with us. It seems a tie to someone who was a real craftsman. A date would be a nice touch too!
