I inherited a good supply of silver solder from a friend that was in the refrigeration business. What kind of flux do I need? I have small amounts of two kinds of flux from Brownells. I think one is low temp and one high. Would this work in a pinch on non critical parts?

Check out: http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/consumables/fluxes.asp

I used Stay Clean liquid for a stainless mesh radiator guard on one of my bikes......works well. Your LWS should have it in stock.

ive been using welco paste for normal silver solder work. when it dries out a bit in the plastic tub, just add water and stir.

temps good from around 800 to 1600

its not for alum, mag, etc,

davidh, Are you saying that you can silver solder aluminum and magnesium?

If the silver solder is sil-phos then there is no flux needed.

no, just referring to the walco info on the flux. . . . .

but it would be great.

Believe it or not, Twenty Mule Train Borax soap makes a good flux when using silver solder on Stainless Steel. Mix soap powder with water to make a paste, apply, and solder. I've used this a lot in the past on knives and orthodontic appliances.

Never thought of the soap. The old flux that came in the yellow can for brass brazing and gas welding was borax powder. It was good at high temperatures never tried it with silver solder. The LWS was open yesterday so I got what I needed. The link to the Harris Site was particularly helpful. After the stroke there are things that I know or have known that I just can't put together anymore. I do appreciate the help and information.
