Not national (though warranted) but pride in the engineers, technicians and machinists responsible for designing and building the Mars Rovers.

Designed to function only 3 months and here we are 5 years on.
Absolutely awe inspiring.

There was a member on here when I first joined that was a heliarc welder for Nasa. He worked on the mars rover, iirc, and some other really neat projects, too. I think his tag was Old Dog, or something like that. He gave me some pointers on welding aluminum a few years ago.

Yes, was just reading again about the Pioneer and other amazingly long-lived spacecraft (and an embarrasing dud or two). Great feats of engineering.

Did you catch the same Natgeo show I did?

I found it fascinating how many times it nearly died only to live again with help form ground control and shear luck.
