Hey guys! I got my drive in the mail yesterday. Geez...I'm wondering if they can make these things any smaller??? Holy crap they are tiny lil things...
First thing I noticed...I need a heat sink.
Do we buy these somewhere or do I have to make one?
And how do I stick the heat sink onto the driver?
And how many years do I have to go to lectrical school before I can understand their instructions?
Geez...the instructions for the Xylotex stuff was so much simpler..lol!

Get a heat sink off a pentium chip, it also has the fan on board, total cost $0.00
What model number drive ?

John...it's a G251.
What is a Pentium chip?
I already have a fan setup in the enclosure I built for my Xylotex drive.

Russ,
It's the heat sink off the main chip out of an old computer.
big finned thing with a 12v fan on the top, you don't have to use the fan if you don't want to.

Thanks John! I have a couple of old computers down at the motel. I'll pilfer one out of a wreck from there.
Thanks!

You could also bolt them down to a slab of aluminum as a heat sink. It need only conduct the heat away from the driver and have enough surface area to transfer the heat to the surrounding air. I have just bolted the Geckos to the steel backplate inside control panels with success - as long as all the other electrical stuff inside there doesn't generate more heat than can dissipate out through the steel side walls of the enclosure.
A formal heat sink like John mentioned is designed to transfer the most heat with the smallest amount of space and material.

I got a heat sink...it's about the same size as the driver. Now..how do I attach it to the driver?
Epoxy on the corners?
Some kind of metal clips?
Thanks!

Would you believe 2 or 4 screws in the dimples on the back of the drive into the heat sink with a dab of heat paste on the mating faces.

Ah..John..I did end up using two screws.
I actually had to buy a stupid heat sink that came in a pack with some other stuff.
The computer store guy couldn't be "bothered" to find a pentium chip.
The heat sink had holes in it for mounting to the box and the driver had two holes that just fit the width of the sink.
Getting the wiring figured out now.
