Every time I try to search google ..it puts itself in UK mode and puts up all UK search results first ......press search the web ..brings up UK search results again .

Same happens with yahoo .

Type in http://www.google.com in the bar at the top of explorer.. it changes itself to google uk ..

Put google.com in my home page ..........it again brings up UK home page .

I'm trying to find a company in Germany called Consul who make car lifts ......on the German parent company's website is phone number of Consul UK .......that does not come up in search results ...

Search results bring up pages and pages of UK garage equipment dealers who sell consul stuff...but rip you off, with the spares prices (middleman nonsense)........no German ones .......in the first 6 pages that I search.

I had consul UK phone number last year .but lost it ....consul UK had reasonable prices.

SO MY QUESTION IS

so how do I set my computer up ....so I don't get this UK diversion crap with the search engines.

Wasn't so bad three months back when google suggested ..alternative spelling ...now the effing thing brings up the alternative results in the search results....weather you like it or not .

Google- consul, halver, germany.

It comes up with
http://www.consul-gmbh.de

which is what you want.

Admitting a bit of trickery- I found where the bits were made ie Halver, in Westphalia.

Hope this helps

Mark,

try country specific Google.

http://www.google.de
http://www.google.co.uk/
http://www.google.co.jp/

If you search for "Consul" on Google Germany it's #5 on the list. http://www.consul-gmbh.com/

thank you Dan ...

guess from now -on, i will have to search......these different regional googles

whatever happened to the world google that used to put up results in no specific order of country that you are based in.

part is has now been purchased at 1/3 of the price of the rip off middlemen merchants ...and I'm getting schematics and operating and maintenance instruction chucked in. :)

It's in google.com as well, its probably just ranked really low. You gotta know what goes on in the background. when you go to goolge.com, it detects your geographical location (geoip), & browser language settings. It uses this data to create wieghting factors to re-shuffle your search results. going to regional versions works around this "kinda".

More and more google works with your life context to make decisions for you that they feel you cannot make correctly for yourself. It is trying to work around your technical failings to use facilities located thousands of miles away in the US when they've gone out of their way to stuff the data centers near you with equipment. They know better, you see. And as they learn more about you they will feed you results you didn't ask for but which they believe you should have asked for. They will continue to watch you and learn.

This will be frustrating for you for a while and you will react by fighting them. They will consider all you do and adapt the search results to fit your mood. After a time you will have been made compliant - they have all the time they need - and you'll start to see visiting google like changing channels on the television or radio which is to say, you'll accept the limitations quietly along with the canned responses others think are adequate for your needs. That reduces the amount of data they need to retain, of course, so it's win-win for you and them.

As time goes on all your searches will finally result in the same page being returned and you will have reached search engine nirvana. No decisions to make, you are compliant, they are efficient, and life is orderly.

To save you time and get you to that state of compliance quickly, here is that page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/hitchhikers/guide/answer.shtml

There ya go. Now understand, they're damn proud of what they are. Google "google is evil" to see how proud (and evil) they are.

Is the problem, quite simply, that Google works - and that technology that works so well at information gathering is scary? Efficient search clearly has privacy implications, but surely the real concern here is the publication of data, not the fact that the public data is utilized.
Some people are shifting to AllTheWeb in response. That's just great - AllTheWeb recently was purchased by the most evil company in search, Overture - the paid listing company, whose business is to make ads and content indistinguishable.

When I was a working mechanical technician in a group of people who also were computer literate we would sometimes fall into the game of who could find a technical answer on the web. As often as not I would come up with the answer using metacrawler.com I still use it to this day as a primary and have not used google.

metacrawler is an InfoSpace company which is here in my hometown of Bellevue. InfoSpace is a front end for Google, Yahoo, and others. They also own dogpile.com.

Our metasearch technology delivers end users the most relevant results on the Web by searching more than 12 of the top search engines, including Google, Yahoo!, Ask, Windows Live Search, and more.

Wonder what partner agreements they have with Google...

You got me thinking ...
I have done a lot to promote my little yahoo foxcub 18 yacht group in the past .. meta keywords , 100's of returned links , submission to hundreds of search engines...all i could possibly do without paying anyone..probably a couple of hundred hours work........under 1000 built ... got 250 plus members for a boat last built in early 80's

now then, I type in the word foxcub ...it ranks 1st in the Google results .

is this because google wants me to see it that way .or my hard work.

can you guys check.

a lot of stuff feeds into how highly your rated.
1. language the page is written in
2. how close the page content matches the meta data
3. how many people link to your site.
4. if memory serves, Google tracks what you click on when you use it

for example google "groups.yahoo.com/group/foxcub18yacht/" a lot of people have linked to your site. this help your ranking a lot.

You might try www.dogpile.com it uses google, yahoo, ask, and live search at the same time.
