I've needed a steady rest 3 times in the past few weeks so buying or making one has moved up to the top of my round tuit list.

My lathe is a middle 80's Taiwan-built 8x16 EMCO clone. I'm thinking it's very, very close to the presently available Sieg 8x12/8x14's available from HF, Lathemaster & others and the steadies that fit them would also fit mine. I know some of you have one (BillH?) and would like to know what the spacing of the ways is (are?) Mine measures roughly 2.91 in or 74 mm measured from the center of the front V to the center of the rear V.

LMS has this one which would be the easiest & quickest way to get one:

...but I like the size and expense of John's:

I suspect the one that LMS sells is the same piece that comes with the 8x14 package. Anybody used their's yet and have a report on how well it worked for you?

I am at work right now, when I get home tonight I will measure the dimensions of my steady rest and post them on here

I am also going to make a steady, I bored a CI round to 2 inches.

The 8x14 and possibly various seig 8's and possibly the 9x20 are clones of the Emco Compact 8 but I doubt interchangability.

my HF 8x14 measures 3.55"(by eye) from the center of the front V to the center of the rear V.
