I had a savage SA bolt set up in my rotary table (first savage) ready to flute.
I'm not sure why but I thought I had better run a file over a hiden place to check for hardness before I hit the go button.
Glad I did the file didnt touch it.
I decided to remove it from the mill.
I am guessing one could anneal it, flute it and re heat treat it.

Anyone know what they are made out of and the hardness?

Thanks
Stephen

To me that's one of those "if ya gotta ask, you better pass" kind of jobs. Yes it can be annealed and re heat treated. But you don't know the type of steel used; Case Hardening v. Thru Hardening, and to what hardness and or depth.

Failure could be very bad.
