Ever since I got my RF-45 clone milling machine I have been scratching my head wondering how to mount a Y axis digital scale so that I wouldn't have to crawl under the table to read it. Up untill now I have been using a 2" DTI on a mag mount attached to a plate I had bolted to the base of the column but it limited my measurable travel. Like this:

So after looking it over for the umpteenth time I decided to mount the scale so that the reader was pretty much in the same place as the DTI head. I used a vertical scale like what you would use on a spindle so that I could read it from the front of the machine.

First I drilled, tapped, and bolted a length of angle to the end of the table carriage:

Then I bolted a piece of plate to the side of a piece of 2" angle and drilled, tapped, and bolted this to the column for the anchor point for the reader:

Then it was just a matter of mounting the scale to all that.

It works fine....not hard to read, but I think eventually I will set up a proper 3 axis DRO display

who cares how elegant it is, it works well done, i'd love a 3ax on my cincinatti but to be honest i manage as most of my work is rough and ready
