That is some outstanding workmanship. The man is an artist.

WOW is right, each one of those pieces is a work of art!
Just goes to show you what one can do if you put your mind to it and not quit until you are satisfied with nothing less than perfection.
I take my hat off to people like that for they are truly both master craftsmen and artists at the same time.

Maybe this guy (http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://biketransplant.tripod.com/fuji_pics/welded_end_ready_for_collector.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread%3Fid%3D4099193%26postid%3D55698997&usg=__8qGQdRHD2pGAsIebSue1stwkjpQ=&h=480&w=640&sz=67&hl=en&start=10&tbnid=cJCfkcQTDRwnDM:&tbnh=103&tbnw=137&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dturbo%2Bmanifold%2Bweld%2Bfail%26gbv% 3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26newwindow%3D1)will bump into that site and derive some inspiration from those photos. I really don't know what the heck he's thinking. If I was that bad I'd hire somebody to do the job rather than waste a perfectly good turbo. And what in the world was he thinking for letting someone with a camera in the same room with his "creation"?

I dont think marcela is an actual bona fide human, i think he's an organic welding robot,.... never seen such a pretty wide weave, you can measure it with a vernier, i am full of dispair at my own effort, i'm going to use glue from now on

Sweet,

As a welder myself, I have never seen such symetrical "aluminum" welds so precise in so many different weld positions. Without a doubt he has his act together. As they say, this guy can probably weld anything from a broken heart to the break of dawn. <smile> Don't forget that they make a square wave pulse welder, makes the stepping easier with practice. This is the only example I could find video wise. It takes a while for the arc to show up in this video but at least you can see the pulse .

Very impressive,

Holy Crap...

I have done some service calls down at SAPA and there are guys that can weld like that. I just cant do it... And they are there standing up and doing it. Geesh...

Whew! Yup...outstanding work! Most impressive to me is the weave and where he welded all those small nipples in. Those are the toughest welds there. I can get straight strigers going like he has but i always have some kind of boo boo every resart or when I slip.
That guy has done that before I bet :D

Works of Art.... BTW If he had not said his name was John, it could very well been done by a lady. I understand they can be better at welding than men.

I remember reading an article a few years ago that had pictures of Aluminum welds on P51 Mustangs built during the war. These were torch welds using Oxy/Acetylene and Aluminum done by both women and men but as the author pointed out the women's welds were easy to pick out from the ones made by the men, they were much better looking (the welds I mean, but I would assume the women were better looking too! :D )

can some you more experienced with welding give some insight? how are these likely done - TIG i'd guess? what is 'weave' that sort of scalloped look? is that particular to Tig? (I'm sure I've seen it in MIG as well, but no idea how to do so)

thanks

I prefer photoshop to make my welds look like that, works with MIG or TIG! (I have no clue how one would go about it either)

Mcgayver,

I am not knocking the welding (just making that clear). If you look at my posting on the first page, I created a link to TIG pulse welding. I believe the welds were done with a square wave and pulse setup. The weave is also something we do quite a bit with low hydrogen rod (in my trade) and with Fleetweld 5P welding rod. The weld pattern is sort of like the letter z, while hold the rod at each side until the weld puddle catches up, which creates the pattern (or lace).

Yup..that's gotta be pulse tig. I ran a $12,000 Miller tig(every bell and whistle you could dream of) at our local pulpmill and could do consistant work like that.
Those weaves are probably done with the tig rod laying in the joint and weaving the torch back and forth across the joint....much the same as we do with cupwalking in pipe welding.

If I remember correctly somewhere in that link he says he doesn't use pulse. Done by hand, no robotics.

Some of the welds are 5 passes too for 200 PSI fuel rails. I think he also mentioned testing to 300 PSI on some of the welds because failure on a top fuel car isn't an option.

My hat is off to him. May he prosper and be successful.

I'd wish him good luck too but he doesn't need it...he's got skill!

dave5605,

I stand corrected. He did say that in the thread as I just went and read it. Like I originally mentioned, amazing.

That has to be the nicest work Ive seen, specially showing a complete job, not just nice bead on one joint. And how the heck do you get in there to weld the tubes going from the head mounting plate to the upper? The inside tubes are way in there, small hands or what. And how do you see it, cant be a self darkening helmet. Mine would get shadowed and I would be flashed LOL Artwork for sure. Guess that what happens when a "starving artist" is looking for work. Bet he has some nice "regular" art as well. I cant draw a straight line.. JR

He's got one hell of a welding positioner or his wrists are ball and socket joints. I would pay to watch him work.

No kidding! A day in the shop leaning over his shoulder would be priceless!
