I need a cutoff toolholder. The distance from the bottom of the toolpost slot to the spindle center is 3/4". What size toolholder shank do I need to look for? Also, I have been using hss toolbits inserted directly into the toolpost slot. Are there holders available that would angle the hss bit upward so I can slide the bit up in order to bring it to the centerline, instead of using shims?

This type of tool holder may be what you want for the angle.

You must take the angle into account when you grind the front relief angle on the tool. I think the tool holder adds 15.

What is the height of the opening in the toolpost? I had a 4 way tool post and used shims. You can make tool holders but if you don't have a lot of room in the slot above the center line a holder is not practical. I think if you look in the online catalog of Enco you will find insert type cutoff holders and blades that will fit your lathe.

My tool post is a 4 way turret with a 3/4" spindle center line height. I use this one from Enco,

It requires no shims to set up on my lathe.

Thank you. I've got a good start figuring out what I need.
