How is the pointer set on a Federal dial indicator? I'd like the pointer to rest at -.025. Are there any manuals on how to rebuild dial indicators? All the brands seem a little different inside.

For cleaning dial indicators have a look at the search button Neil, the pointers are normally set on the shaft by a friction fit like the hands on watches. If you have a look on the watch repair tools sites, you can see what a hand remover looks like. Replacement of the hand just means positioning it in the place YOU want before pressing it back into place.

Have a look at the following link.

Strictly curious Neil, but why are you 'offsetting' the hand?

Supposedly "standard practice" with how dial indictors are preset.

Dial indicators normally have the hand pointing to the nine o'clock position so that they are preloaded when setting up. They should be set initially with the pointer at 12 o'clock.
