View Full Version : My new coolant system

I was busy over spring break...

This is a simple flood coolant system run with a 15 dollar fountain pump, that I am planning to add to the drill press and mill as well. There is barely enough head and the pump really should be a bit stronger. One can make the system for about 60 dollars using a Little Giant pump, which is more than I wanted to spend.

The sump is a 1 gallon bucket, hung from a hook under the bench. THe pump is wrapped in an old stocking (very fine screening- great!) and stuck to the bottom, where it neither touches the bottom nor breaks the surface. The chip tray is a car servicing tray, bent up to make a backsplash, and with the sides angled a bit. A drain was installed, and will be covered with a very fine brass screen when it is available. Unfourtuantely, the nylon drain has a rim which does not allow the chip pan to drain completely.

The system is a bit feeble, but works well. I use a Rustlick soluble oil that advertises good sump life.

It used to be fractional Hp Chemical Feed pumps were cheap and readily available on Ebone. That is what I use in a couple of my machines with coolant tanks made of welded 3/16 sheet

Interestingly, i just picked up a much larger Little Giant pump from an estate sale. Maybe now I can have separate coolant on each machine.

Is there actually a picture there?
I've been screwing with my settings and don't see a thing.

Should be fixed now.

Nope, not yet!

WTF? It should be. I added photo tags and URLs.

Not bad work. Who's the chick in the background with no clothes?

lolol. / WTF.

Is this some sort of retarded joke regarding the color of soluble oil?

Who knows a good way to fasten a piece of fine screen over an inlet?

I would sure like to see it!

Tried again. Hate the dumb image posting method. But this should work...

Is that a pipe fitting tack welded to the cross slide of your lathe?

04-29-2009, 10:20 PM
No. It is custom turned aluminum magneted to the cross slide.

The magnets tend to attract chips. I have to figure out how to clean them off.
