View Full Version : Grizzly G0484 Delivery Question

I have ordered a Grizzly G0484 Mill/Drill and expect delivery in July. I need to make some arrangements to get it into the shop and I was wondering if some of you who have purchased this model could help with some of the details of the way it was shipped. I would assume it was paletized. Was it boxed? Or just wrapped? Was it completely assembled or did you have to assemble major parts? Was it shipped on the base or seperate?
Any info would be appreciated.

Paul-
I have the other version of this mill, without the base. It arrived in a large wooden crate that I stripped while in the driveway. I managed to horse the mill onto a hand truck. I was barely able to tip the truck back as the mill is over 700 pounds. I moved it into my garage on a hand truck. I built my own base and uses a homemade wooden A-frame gantry and a come-a-long to lift the mill onto my base. The base has drawers and wheels so the mill is now moble. I have since moved it twice and it is now resting happily in my shop.

I have a G4003g lathe & a h/v saw both from Grizzly. Along w/ 2 mills from Lathemaster. All delivered LIFTGATE. I think the most I ever tipped a driver was $10 to put the pallet where I wanted it in my garage. The key is LIFTGATE.
just my $0.02

Bought a G0463 for Dad a while back. I picked it up im my truck at the shipping depot where they loaded it into my truck. Now this mill is only 375 lbs(?) and was shipped in a wooden box.
My brother in law and I were able to use piano dollies to move it around.
For your application, I would also suggest having a truck with a lift gate to drop it off for you. Lifting anything heavy is always an issue. And at 883 lbs your mill will be tough to just lift and move to the garage.
Remember to be safe as you lift and move that machine.
cheers!

Know anyone with a backhoe or skid steer? You can strap it and lift it with those. Fortunatley, I have a backhoe and that's how I do lots of unloading.

Thanks to all. I got the answer I wanted in a PM. I do not plan to lift it myself, I just wanted to know how it was packaged so I could advise the handlers.

Big machines allways come fully assembed (in my experiance)
Thats great as you get to try and remember as best you can how everything goes.. Because the first thing you need to do, is strip it into bits and clean out all the gunk that comes free with every made in (anywhere) HSM.
Even gearboxes can arrive filthy inside. ways are usally coated in protective wax/grease that needs to be striped and replaced with way oil (requireing a complete disassembley of everything to get AT the mating surfaces of the ways, you can't just clean what you can get at)
Consider it about a week of your time to clean it all up. you'll be glad you did, it will move 5x easyer once you clean it then it does outta the box (or the one on the shop floor where you bought it) And everything won't ruin itself within a week.
(Note, clean with light solvents like kerosene, then wipe down with rags doused in way oil, or maybe a nice grease if its an area you arnt likey to ever oil again, like random bits of exposed metal that arnt ways.

Chris,
I looked at the space available when I responed to your message and it "said" 50%. I had cleaned it out recently. ????? I will check it again. Sorry about that.
So Grizzly is now saying November? I hope I am ahead of that schedule. They originally promised July and then August. I need to call again.

They were giving the same kind of constant backorder shipping info over a year ago when I was looking for a mill. The mill was new to the market back then. Nothing seems to have changed.
I got a deal on an ENCO one and had it in less than a week. At least I was able to make feeble attempts at making chips rather than sit on the edge for 6 months wondering when I would get the Grizzly.

I also was backordered 4 times by Griz. I also finally said the h**l with it and talked to Enco. I got basicly the same mill with free shipping, only had to pay for the lift gate service. We transfered it to the ben of my PU and then I slid it into my shop. the base comes unassembled so had to assemble that and then lift the mill up onto the base and slide the whole thing to it's final spot in the shop. Put a 3 axis DRO on it and just got a power feed.
Good luck waiting for Griz to come through. I think they are doing a bait and switch. Hoping that folk will go for a different more expencive mill.

Thanks to all. I got the answer I wanted in a PM. I do not plan to lift it myself, I just wanted to know how it was packaged so I could advise the handlers.
In the last year, I took in a G4003G lathe and 3103 milling machine. My building has the benefit of a loading dock and freight elevator, so it wasn't too painful. The driver off loaded onto our dock and we used our pallet jack to bring the items into the space. The lathe was far more difficult as it wasn't mounted to the bases. We used a HF engine lift to do all the lifting and positioning. Although I had my helper with me on the initial lift, once I felt comfortable with the tool I was capable of moving it around by myself during the leveling process.
The mill was a piece of cake, although we were initially shipped the 3102 model in error and I had to add the power feed myself. Since the mill had arrived in such good condition, I didn't feel like packing it back up and having a new one shipped. I feel that Grizzly supported me well in this whole procedure, but the instructions and most of the mounting parts provided with the powerfeed weren't applicable to my particular application. Their tech support people were pretty helpful, but in the end, it required a bit of imagination and a lot of online research to get it all sorted out.
I will say that they have cheerfully replaced any parts and pieces which may have been damaged during shipment. In the case of the lathe, one of the headstock covers was chipped and they sent a new one. The dog plate lugs wouldn't tighten and they replaced that as well. As it turned out, it wasn't the plate but the lugs themselves, as the replacement plate had the same issue. Once I trimmed about .150" off the threaded end of the lugs in the lathe, they were able to turn in far enough to tighten beautifully. With the mill, there was a cracked mount on the power switch and some stress cracks on the tank for the one shot oiler. Both items were replaced without question.
Since I didn't know diddley about machine setup and am too old and busy to take machine shop 101, I feel pretty good about my purchases now about a year down the line. The backorder process was long on both items, but it enabled me to do a bit of research, find a few useful forums, prepare my space and lay in some tooling. I will say that having Techshop here in my area and a relative who is a master machinist/gunsmith has been very advantageous. I managed to get the Grizzly DRO installed in the lathe without too many problems and am still waiting to get up the courage to mount the DRO on the milling machine. Because of inexperience and access issues, the lathe DRO install was somewhat difficult for me. I expect the mill to be a bit less so, although it's bad luck to make predictions like that.
Not meaning to hijack this thread, but you might find my experiences to be useful.

PMs: Weird - could be a forum software glitch
What I was going to say was that I wanted to move the unit into the shop on a car trailer. From doing a bit of measuring, it won't clear the outer door on the trailer, so the mill and stand would have to separate using a hoist on the trailer, then move the pieces in. The outer part of my shop (more open shed) has some busted up concrete and moving a loaded engine hoist across it is not possible. I can get a car trailer back close to the good floor in the main shop, or I can get in there with a pickup.
The last date I had was "mid October" for the G0484 and November for a G0519 should I want that unit.
I got a response from Bob at Lathemaster - he has a few left and the free shipping lasts until they are gone. It's the same unit basically without the table feed, power lift and stand. Lathemaster has the table drive for $265 so that's $350 less than the G0484. I can build a hell of a stand for $350 :D And the Lathemaster unit will ride in on a pickup. So now I guess I have to think about if having the Griz is worth the wait. Sounds like it's inferred that the other square columns are equal in usability.
