View Full Version : What's the right insert for this boring bar?

Picked this up at a used tool stall today. It came with what looks like a DNMG insert with some relief ground onto it, but looking at the holder I think it's designed for a parallelogram form.

I believe it's an old Sandvik number, but neither their online catalogue nor Google has found me anything useful:-

R136.5 - 40F - 1611

Thanks for any help. Hope it's not one of Sandvik's obsolete types!

Tim,

I think you need KNUX tips - 16 04 05 for instance. They come in lh & rh types.

Thanks Ian, I think it's making a bit of sense now. I was confused by the bar giving the impression that it had originally used inserts with a centre hole.
After a bit more digging around, it looks as though the

S40V-CKUNL 16

bar is more or less the same thing, and it's the RH inserts that I need (conventional boring bar format)?

Cheers

Tim,

If you haven't found them already, this might be a cheap way of checking that the KNUX tips'll fit:

I *think* these are the right hand ones. No idea what the grade is - for all I know, they could be for machining chocolate...

Thanks Ian, I hadn't found those. The pic is much better than the other ebay KNUX offerings, gives me more confidence about the hand etc., I'll see if I can get those.

This does look to be pretty much the same bar that I have

Length is not to scale!!

Got those in today's post. Heigh Ho!
Definitely KNUX 16 04 tips, but my bar takes LH inserts, these are RH.

The Sandvik link I posted is for a LH bar, which takes RH inserts. Trouble is, they use the same drawing as for the opposite and more common hand of bar (mine), which evidently needs the LH insert. In fact if you find their insert drawings, they use the same drawing for both hands, if you don't realise that you'll easily get confused (as I did)
Back to ebay!

Thanks
Tim
