OT-Adobe Flash Player question(s)

What good is it? Why do I need it? What will happen if I uninstall the Active-X?
The only thing I've ever seen it used for is flashing ads all over my screen. I want to get rid of it. Any drawback?

You need it for you tube I think ..and other movie players in news sites etc .
