I bumped in to these 2 sites during some Google research about surface plates and airy points. I found them both to be very informative about precision and attention to detail in rebuilding machines & engines. I'm not sure if either of the gentlemen are members here. If so, kudos to you sir(s)!

I recommend going back to the beginning of the blog (2006) on the 2nd link and wading through the whole thing. It took me a couple days in my spare time to go through it all but found it very interesting. Most all of the machining-related stuff is about VW engine conversions for aircraft but the author's attention to detail, engineering plain talk and thoughts on living frugally are very good. Unfortunately, he also documents his personal battle with cancer but with his writing style and humor, it's very interesting and informative.
