Leland Gifford DP...Some of you may remember my post about it from awhile ago..

Just now getting around to fixing it up..Its has been disassembled, stripped and primed.

I have several questions and need some suggestions...

1. Should I paint the bolts that hold the top to the base?
2. Picture 2 has a white cirlcle around it. I would like to know what its for (not the white circle.. the thing in it)....
3. Foot pedal for moving the drill up and down not working... I am posting 2 pics that show the basics of what I have... I have no clue as any possible assembly of how it would work.. I am going to have to make what ever it is... so a drawing, picture, something to give me some ideas....

Added a pic of a drawing of what it looked like originally..

Thanks.. and now the pics....

Cuemaker, the lever in photo 2 may have had something to do with the belt tensioning in the original configuration.

Cuemaker, I think that you have discovered what the lever was for, as for the bolts, I personally dont like them painted. If I ever have to remove them I know I will have to clean them off before putting a wrench on. Otherwise, what I thought was a good tight fit on the bolt with the wrench turns out to be rounded flats after the paint moves and allows a wrench that is a bit too large to spin.

With that said, my old girl had a few bolts painted because I didnt want to take them out. I have gone back with a scribe and cleaned them up a little.

Lastly, the table mechanism on your press, do you have a photo of the dovetail straight on so that we might see some workings that go to the table? If some more of the mechanism could be shown we might be able to give you some more direction.

The foot lever didnt move the table.. it moves the drill head up and down... I pretty much have it figured out... If you look at my 1st pic, you see the hole at the base near the start of the round column. I am guessing that from there a rod came out and attached to a gear near the head. That pic that someone sent me is very helpfull...I just now either need to find the gear or have one made...

The table is a simple dovetail that clamps tight.. I need to have the gib brazed together as it is broke.

I second that --- I cringe and get hives when I have to paint a bolt head, and get plumb nauseous if I have to do the nut and exposed threads:eek:

I get it now. Makes sense. Good luck on your project.
