Does anyone have a good source for 8620 steel? I need to find a supplier for 4 1/4 inch 8620 (or other options that would work for directional boring drill reamers. It would need to remain soft after welding on other components.) I will also need someone with the capabilities to pre drill the stock to an ID of 2 1/4 inch. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm unsure of the exact alloy, but have you contacted the usual suspects in the oilwell drill collar world for "stub up" material? Guys like SII, NOV, Hycalog.

In oil and gas country every major town has one or two shops doing thread recuts and refacing. A few calls might yeild a bargain on DC material that has been recut often enough that it needs to be stubbed up or scrapped. The bonus there would be that the ID would already be bored out althoughthe OD may be beat up some or even undersized...
