View Full Version : 4-axis software?

I'm considering a small cnc conversion and I'd like to assess the usefulness of including the hardware for a 4th axis to run a rotary table. This purely a hobby thing for doing small aluminum and delrin parts so I'm not interested in expensive, professional software. With this limitation in mind, are there any lower cost programs that will do simple 4-axis machining?

Normally when using the 4th axis one of the other axis, usually Y doesn't move so even though you have 4 you are back to using 3.
Image a ring, held on a mandrel and turning on it's A axis.
feed is applied via Z and the 3rd movement is obtained via X as the A axis is central to X.

Two cost effective ones are Dolphin Partmaster and I think Cambam also does 4th axis as i have seen some rings done by Evan.

Thanks for this information, Your Lordship. This tells me that I might as well order up a Gecko G540 and build in 4-axis capability.
