    Espingarda da Perfeyta

I ran across this on another board. It is a precis of a 17th century book on gunmaking at the time. It gives a brief look at the tools and methods of the time and a few examples of the level of precision, quality and beauty of the firearms of the time.

It also gives a look at how a barrel was drilled and turned and how a shotgun tube was rolled and welded from sheet.

These are just teasers, but worth a look and remembering the next time someone says some task is impossible to acomplish without CAD, EDM, CNC or any other of the alphabet soup.

    Up the Khyber

Great work - and a great lesson - Jim.

I saw a TV documentary recently about making guns in primitive shops and conditions in the area of the Khyber pass in Pakistan not so long ago. The quality - and the prices - covered the whole spectrum. Some of those guns were identical to and in many case improved versions of the ubiquitous Kalashnikov/AK-47 and others from all over the world.

There was no CAD or CNC or what we might regard as shops good enough - but they did it - as they have for generations.

It seems that the quality and prices were so good that they had orders from commercial traders and private users and collectors from all over the world.

    It was a great program.
