i am going to try to make a couple torsion (twisting) springs. they are .075 music wire, and only 3-3/4 coils with aprox 1/8" nibs on the ends at 90 degree. they are 9/16" id, tapering to aprox 5/8 id for the 3-3/4 coils. just little rascals that pull the door handle back into horiz. on a 1946 hudson project.

i have turned a tapered mandrel to wind them on but i was wondering if there is any information about how much smaller the mandrel should be so they can kinda unwind after i make them ?

or maybe i should just experment....................... and let ya'all know when i finally figure it out.

anyone ?

There was an article in one of our host's magazines a few years back. IIRC it was rather exhaustive.

There could be a small market for these,if you get it figured out.

I know I am going to need a set on my 47 pu.And you could put a add. in W.T.N. for them.

like was was just said in anoth post, its the "chase, not the kill" thing. . . . after one or two get done its then just a job, the engineering and prototyping was the challange. but then again to help a fellow hudson guy.. .

im also going to cast the aluminum part that this spring controls. maybe even today. . . i'll make pictures of progress, everyone like pictures.

I have a commercially made bench type spring winder. There's an adjustment to control tension on the wire as it's being wound. That determines how closely the windings are to the mandrel diameter.

.075" is pretty stiff, so I expect that will need a fair bit of undersizing on the mandrel.

the first spring i tried was on a tapered mandrel that was right on size based on the finnished product that i have for a sample. i needed to try one and see how the wire reacted. the test spring was .060 too large in the i.d. when done & i was 3/4 of a wrap short of desired finished product.

i turned down the mandrel about .060 and did another one. perfect enuf on the finished diameter. (within a couple of tenths) next i will try to get the coils spaced properly and i will start cranking them out until i've used up all the wire.

i do have a bunch of pix's so i will get them all up tonite when the project is done.

the "chase" continues. . . . . . .
