Can anyone direct me to a trucking company / shipper that doesn't try to rape you when trying to get a machine shipped

Thanks in advance.

I've not used either but others seem to be happy with these two:

http://www.forwardair.com/

The latter requires that the item be delivered and picked up from the originating and destination terminals.

You could try Penner International or Canadian Freightways (both operate in the USA and Canada and are very reasonable). CF has a $10/lb. automatic no charge insurance - the value still has to be put on original B/L

Keep looking. Don't settle for the standard 3 quotes.

I am trying to ship 320 lbs of iron to Alaska from Idaho, and have gotten quotes ranging from 150 bucks to nearly 700 dollars. 150 bucks sounds more like it.

The 150 dollar quote comes from Carlile trucking:"BRENT PETERSEN"<bpetersen@carlilekw.com>

Just a plug - this one is much less than the 450 dollar quote I got from freightquote.com

Another source for shipping is Craters and Freighters. They are a type of clearing house for freight. The people arevery knowledgable and helpful. Have used them for shipping internet equipment throughout the US and Europe. They will even do the paper work on the international side. Have several levels of shipping cost. Also if you don't have the time to crate your items they are very good at this and take great care to make sure it arrives safe.
