Hello everybody!

I post VERY seldom here as I have my hands full on a swedish site: www.maskinisten.net However now it seems as we need outside help to solve a question in this thread: http://www.maskinisten.net/viewtopic.php?p=138150#138150

Naturally "HSM" is the first site that pops in to mind...

What is this?

Translation:

This seems to be some kind of measuring instrument that was aquired in an auction. I do not have any idea as to what it is supposed to be used for. The instrument has an ordinary micrometerdevice in one end, a permanent V-block in the other end and an adjustable one in the middle. The micrometers spindlecenter is under the V-blocks(in the hole of the adjustable one)..... What is it used for? Measuring? Some kind of precision stop? It is made by(a swedish firm called) CE-Johansson.

Note: I´m not the one asking, I'm just relaying "jörgens" question from the other site. Feel free to answer/discuss in this thread.

i'm never going to get one of these right!, but they are fun or am i madder than i thought?
i remember an experiment in school to determine coefficients of expansion, the gizmo looked like this [but not the same] so thats my guess for this week
it looks cool though

It'll be handy even if you never use it:D

Possibly some sort of tool pre-setter?

CEJ is a well known maker of micrometers. Someone else probably made the fixture.

It would be helpful to know what else was being auctioned along with this.

I'll guess that it's factory and not a micrometer head with a shop made jig as it matches the box dimensions. Since it has two "V" blocks, it may lay along a cylinder shape object. The micrometer head lines up with the small hole in the center block, so perhaps it adjusts or measures something that runs parallel to the cylinder. Gunsmithing? Maybe to adjust something along the length of a barrel?

CE Johansson is a leading manufacturer of precision measuring tools. Johansson is the originator of the gauge blocks, hence Jo-blocks.

It is probably as Lane says, a specialty gage made by Johansson for some specific inspection function. Many manufacturers make jigs and fixtures for specific applications.

Goose -- good point about the factory box. FWIW, this is not a current standard catalog item for CEJ. Someone with an older catalog might be able to track the model number (on the aforementioned box).

I think it is shown upside down in the pictures. The centre Vee block is also probably meant to positioned against the end block that holds the micrometer. The wide angle of the vees argues that what it sits on is probably something round of fairly large diameter. Once in place something else may be placed on the flat side of the vee blocks and adjusted in reference to the fixed vee block which may be butted against a stop, perhaps a flange.

If one were inspecting welds in pipe for cracks using an ultrasound or radiation source you would want to know precisely where the instrument is located in order to be able to accurately specify the location of the crack.

Its for measuring the Flange Locations accurately on a assembly . Sometimes engineers not knowing what they are doing want things in perfect position even though it really doesnt matter at all. Ive seen it all my life in the aerospace and Military machining fields,. Makes you want to get a job as a walmart greeter. (Lately I noticed these wal mart greeters are all foreigners and baerely speak the english. ) I guess you can yell at them all you want and they smile and say speako nopo englishoo
