View Full Version : How to remove backplate

I think I took all the screws and bolts out, but the plate is still attached to the chuck! I must be missing something, but don't know what it is. The back plate will move about 1/8" rotationally, but won't seperate. If you can give me a little help I will be greatful... :(

One important detail about fitting a backplate to a chuck is that the parts fit tightly. The chuck usually has a recess in the back, and the back plate is turned to fit as tightly as is reasonable in order to achieve the best concentricity.

When fitting a new backplate I have to whack my chuck with a mallet to start it onto the turned backplate, and then draw it up tight with the mounting screws:

Stands to reason it would be a matter of some force to get it off again.

with the chuck on a bench ,screw the jaws out and tap on the scroll with a peice of wood or plastic rod as a punch.

HAHA, you guys are the best. I just tapped on it a bit and it popped off!
