drilling question

I am making a boring bar to line bore a southbend lathe gearbox and need to drill a 7/16" hole thru a 1" shaft at a 45* angle. What would be the best way to drill this shaft on that angle? Oh, and the shaft is 24" long and the hole needs to be 7" from the end. Thanks in advance.

Hold it in the mill vise with the vise turned 90deg, set with a angle
block, held with a V block and mill a notch to start the center drill
and go for it.

I would first use an endmill to get a flat surface for the drill bit tip to enter.
