Thanks to whoever said to clean the threads on the lead screw,using a piece of string! I have tried wire brushing,spraying,air blowing and cussing to keep the threads clean. I even took the lead screw off the lathe several times and cleaned it. String works great! Thanks

George;

The guy who thought that one up died before they invented Hydroelectric Dams.

I think that is where they got the idea for tooth floss too!

I use that burpap type of string - about 1/8 to 3/16 diameter. Thick, heavy, leaves no little fuzzys on the leadscrew. Slides along well too, less apt to catch up in the screw.

Is that burlap string what we used to call binder twine? Can you still buy that string?

Leather and sail shops have some kinky threads (including Kevlar). Lee Vally has string as well in the gardening catalog.

I'm guessing that the "burlap" string being referenced is not binder twine. I don't think binder twine would work very well.

The "burlap" string may be jute.
