What is the deal with insert thickness? for most 3/8" IC inserts it seems you can get 1/8" thickness and 3/16" thickness, Isent this just unnessacarly complicating things? When would you want a thinner or thicker insert? isent that just causing me to have to adjust lathe tool center height if I change thickness?

also it seems the 3/16" thickness ones usally come in sharp corner radiuses.. but not allways.

Sometimes the thicker inserts can be flipped over for 3 more cutting edges - and thus require the extra thickness.

gda: that does not depend on the insert thickness, rather if the insert has a relief ground on it, or is neutral, typicaly a XNXX insert, like TNMG can be fliped to get 6 cutting tips.

You could email the insert companies and ask why there is a thick and thin insert of the same shape. It may be a better answer than you would get here.

Found that out the hard way.... made a toolpost mod for a specfic set of tools, left 15 thou for height "adjustment", then bought 100 inserts.. HA.. 20 thou thicker... grrr...
