The early German immigrants to this part of Texas used to meet at a range on the bank of Onion Creek, just West of Austin Berkstrom airports current location. Their Schutzen rifles were used in both offhand and a standing rest type Iron Sight matches at about 90 yards. The clubs name was something like Schutzen el Centrum. ( Shoot the center ) We called it Rifle Club Centrum. This was a very social occasion. They would drink a beer shoot another round…. Drink another beer… In the end everyone had a great time and you determined not who the best shot was but who could shoot the best Drunk. DWI was not a problem back then the horse knew his way home.

Schutzenfests were popular with all the Bunds in America. The late, great Harry Pope used to participate until an accident made it impossible for him to shoot a schutzen rifle in the off-hand position. If you ever get the chance, read "The Story of Pope's Barrels".

And they are still popular today. There's the American Single Shot Rifle Association, the International Single Shot Association and the Wyoming Schutezen Union...all with slight variations on the same rules. The ASSRA is mostly East Coast, the ISSA is the successor to the Coors Schuetzenfest organization and is mostly Midwest and West Coast, and the WSU is...the WSU. All three organizations have websites, the ASSRA and WSU have forums.

Still a lot of Schuetzen shot in the Texas Hill Country. New Braunfells club is one of the oldest rifle clubs in the country. 1849 Those guys were real nice to me and my Schuetzen rifle the year I worked in Texas
