Canada is sending the DART team (Disaster Assistance Response Team) which has 4 components, an engineers platoon, a field hospital, a security platoon and logistics/transportation. We are also sending or diverting a supply ship(s) and planel loads of aid supplies. They won't be wasting any time on this since the highest official in Canada, Govenor General MichaŽlle Jean is from Haiti. She is the Queen's representative and isn't just a figurehead. She has the power to dissolve the government or form the government during motions of confidence and following elections.

For some reason, I thought that Canada "Brought the Constitution Home" several years back, and that meant their government was no longer operating under the authority of the Crown. Well, live and learn. Perhaps the idea came to me in one of my many Grade "C" or "D" dreams.

Please don't let this digression cause a diversion from the real story here - the earthquake in Haiti. Relief in a time of disaster is indeed a worthy effort. The pictures on the evening news certainly look grim.

The governor General also has the power to dismiss any servant of the crown (elected or appointed official) in the case of wrong doing or illegal act. She also appoints judges. The governor General is the Commander in Chief as well.

She has issued a statement on the situation available here:

Evan, thanks for the pointer. I followed a couple of the links concerning the organization of the Government, and it was most enlightening, not to mention interesting.

Does say its legit however. (Assumeing redcross.org and the 3 other sites I checked are legit.. very likey) But it pays to check with all the scams going on.

I donated to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund through the Silicon Valley Red Cross. My employer is actively soliciting donations that they match on a dollar per dollar basis :)

I heard someone say they were devastated to hear that Haiti had no effective leadership, limited social services, and the economy was devastated.
I wasn't sure if they were talking about before the earthquake or after. :)
