Iím looking for the ultimate rust & bluing remover, something that will remove rust & bluing without frosting or pickling the underlying metal surface. Something that will give me a bright clean surface. Would also prefer something that wonít rust the rest of my shop.
Thanks

Among the best methods of rust removal without damaging the base metal or destroying the rest of the shop is electrolytic rust removal. It will not leave the metal ready for the bluing tank, but does leave a clean part that will require minimal polishing to prepare. It removes only the rust, so any pitting will remain. There is no frosting of the base metal as you would get with even mild acid solutions.

It is also safe, so the process does need to be closely monitored. Set the part up and leave it for a day or so with no harm to the part. You will need to clean the electrode from time to time as it will crud up depending on how heavy the rust is.

This is one of the better write ups on the process;

Evap-o-rust of Rust Beeter, try them on some scrap first. Auto Zone sells evap-o-rust.
