How is the hole drilled which carries gas from the bbl up to the gas tube? Guess I could understand it if the front sight is cast but when its forged thats a mystery to me. So, does anyone know how do they do it???

Straight through the rear barrel ring.

Not on mine unless it was welded shut.

That may very well be..... however it would serve no purpose other than aesthetics, which no one will see anyway once it is installed and the sling swivel is in place.

it's an investment casting. At least my bushmaster one is.

HP,
My bad...the one I removed has the hole you show. :D Sorry about the false alarm, I missed that when I was inspecting it. Duh!

RB,
I wasnt sure how mine was made. How can you determine forged or cast?

I have a Bushmaster that was forged. It has a hole in the rear ring. Replacing it with a home made gas block, it was a b-tch to remove. The taper pins would NOT come out (yes, in the right direction) and when I finally cut the whole thing off, you could see chemical action between the barrel, rings and pins ... on a new M4. Den
