After reading a recent post where Sir John was scrounging a tiny piece of TI... I dug out my cache.

It's been kicking around my shop for a year now. All 6AL-4V except the 7 inch round which is Class 2. I also have a some TI sheet not shown in the pics.

So.. scrap at $2.00 a lb?

Turn it into chips and have a nice burn pile on the 4th July?

Sell it on Ebay?

Hoard it and wait for the price to go up?

Make it into pulleys for my grinder (the 6061 version will cost $3.00 per pound)?

Carve my name and date into it, then throw it into the bottom of deep lake for future archaeologists to marvel over?

I checked the prices.. LOL...

6AL4V 3.75 inch round - $1619.45 per foot! That's $12.21 per cubic inch. My 5.6 diameter x 6.5 inch chunk (center) works out to $1955.98.. if the $/cubic inch holds. Easier still - that's $75 per pound... So my cache would cost me 56x75 = $4200!

Heck maybe someone would swap me a nice Bridgeport for it? Sure... ;)


Actually, I have no idea if the pricing is even real... but the source is www.onlinemetals.com. I see they'll give me 10% off for orders over $100. I'll get right on that.

You might be able to get a decent price on ebay. I would jump on some of it but I am not using the stuff I have as it stands.

I think I paid about $60 for a 4" round about the size you have there.

If you are not aware of it there is a market for that type of stuff on ebay. I have purchased quite a bit of D2 machine ground ends off of ebay. You might be shocked at what it goes for. I would start bidding at something like
$75.00 with a Buy it Now of $200 for corporations who want it bad enough to buy it now. This stuff ain't likely to be used on home user projects is it?

If I type 6al-4v into ebay search it returns a boat load of hits, and it's pricey. One 6 inch diameter has a buy-it-now at $60 per 1/2 inch!

Online metals probably does not stock this and would buy it out from someone else marking it up 20-40% in the process. Not a realistic value / price. You could check President Titanium or Titanium Industries for current new price. I think the new price for 6AL4V should be in the 35-50 dollar raqnge for new. Usually scrap Ti is about 20-25% of new material 6-12 per lb should be about right for solid scrap. The lowest I have ever seen it was around 2000-2002 with new around 15.00 and scrap at about 3.00 lb. Call a few scrap yards in your area to get the current value. You could always swap with them for something you can use.

The best price I could get was $1.75-2.00 a lb for solid, and around here they don't let you swap for anything but cash.

I did find some avid bicycle builders that would like to swap it for something more useful though..:)
