When making dovetail cuts for things such as quick change tool post, what angle do you use? How do you know which angle to use for what application? Thanks.

Go with 60,it's the most popular.I don't recall seeing a 45 dovetail on any machine tools come to think of it.

Most of the dovetail cutters are 60*

60 is the easiest to cut and thus the most widely used. Which is strongest, 45 or 60, depends, it's a vector thing as to how what angle and magnitude presures are applied. Lot of 45 dovetails in use on older machines.

Some say a 55 is the most prefered, you will find these on European machines. Kinda like a 55 thread being stronger.

60 good, and cutters are easy to come by.

Sherline tools use some strage angle like 58 degrees. Some say it is just to make it for others to copy, but the Sherline explanation is that the orignial disigner looked it up in Machinery Handbok and that said it was the best angle. They stick with it for compatibility with old machines.

Id use 60 degrees for anyting I was building both sides of since cutters are available in that size.
