In another thread it is stated that standard gear milling cutter geometry is accurate for the lowest tooth count of the range.

Question is: If you wish to cut a gear one tooth less than the specified range of the cutter should you step down a cutter or would you be better off outside the specified cutter range?

the form is more critical for lower tooth count.

I'd step down unless you gotta have the gear NOW, and you don't have the next lower cutter.

That makes sense, thanks.

New gearing applications I'll remember to choose tooth counts that are at the bottom of the cutter range if possible.
