    Lathe? Whodunit?

I vaguelly remember receiving an email from somebody, they said they had planned to build a lathe from flat stock i believe. I was wondering if i could get more info on it, because it sounds very interesting.
    Does anyone actually read siglines?

That would be me. I intend to start next week. My goal is to build an small manual lathe from readily available stock materials that a beginner could build for himself. I will post the results be they good , bad , or ugly .
I have, what I think to be, a unique and simple design for the gibbs but you will have to wait and see .

Sounds interesting, can't consider "ugly". as form follows function. ("its just gotta look that way to work correctly!")

          George,

You have my interest too. Please document the construction!

We are speaking of a metal lathe, right?

No,we are talking about a wax candle lathe that could also be used to turn metal

              Sorry Shed,couldn't resist

Great idea! Sure beats trying to cut the candles down with a knife to get em into the holders...

I was thinking along those lines when I wanted a lathe but didn't want to have to cast all the parts in the Gingery designs. One of my concepts uses a 4 wheel drive wheel spindle for the head. I like the tapered wheel bearings and the center hole where the drive axle was. I would have wanted a belt drive running on the drum. That's as far as my thinking went before I found a SB9 that I just had to have.

Interesting project. I hope to see someone do one.

                  Thanks,

                  Spence

"Building A Small Lathe" by L.C. Mason, avilable from Wise Owl Publications has a lot of good ideas and is worth looking at. He makes extensive use of available flat CR steel stock.
