I made a happy discovery on the weekend that may already be widely
known, but which I thought I would post about in case there are one
or two others out there who haven't found out yet.

The discovery? Tremclad offers their rust paint in a base that can be
easily and economically tinted to an exact match by the local big box
hardware store.

always best when matching paint to let it sit and flash off for ten mins ...it usually turns a different shade.

Actually, a colour analyzer was used.

I took a sample part that an employee inserted in the machine. She
removed the lid from the can of base paint and placed the can in
a receptacle under an automated tint dispenser, then three computer
-measured streams of tint flowed into the can.

The employee mixed the can, daubed a quantity of paint on an
inconspicuous spot on the part and let it dry. Et voilą! Perfect
match. Still looks great a few days afterward.

Considering that I started out hoping for something that would pass
muster as long as painted items were not standing immediately beside
the equipment I was aiming to match, this is a great outcome.
