Ok another question. I need to remove the barrel on a 22 I'm working on. It's not pinned so I have to assume it's threaded. Would the threads most likely be RH or LH? No visible way to know.

99.9% probability that they are right hand.

Right hand most likely.

To check:
Look at the rifling from the breech end. You should be able to see the twist.
Remember that the force that spins the bullet spins the barrel in the other direction. That's the direction that will be tightening the barrel in the receiver.

Sorry, Mcskipper, but the direction the rifling turns has nothing to do with barrel threads. 99.9% of rifles made with threaded barrels have used right hand threads, and right hand twist rifling. Common taps and dies are right hand threads. We live in a predominantly right handed world. :D

What is the make and model number? That would help a lot.

Numrich has the barrels listed for $38, unfortunately there is no picture let alone one good enough to confirm the threads are right hand. Don't know what you have to do but do you need a new barrel?

Never talked to the fine folks at Numrich but maybe they'd look and tell you? I'm guessing probably not but a phone call is pretty cheap.

I found some old sears manuals on the internet but no information other than the barrel part number.

this may be a terrible thing to contimplate, but could the receiver just be a tight press fit on the barrel?? Sweat soldered , maybe? you are sure there is no pin? Hi standars/ jc higgins not exactely top quality stuff!

Took the barrel off yesterday. RH thread. Penatrating oil and just a tiny bit of heat near the receiver and it came loose with no problem. Joe, I'd have to disagree on hi standard quality. I've had several 22's of various manufacture with pinned barrel and poor machining. The jc higgins is excellent quality. All the parts are precision and the trigger group is especially good. This particular weapon was disassembled by my son many years ago and the extractor was missing. gunparts had the spring and extractor, so we're going to restore it for my Grandson. The bore appears to be perfect. I killed hundreds of squirrels with it as a boy and I sure hope he will do the same.
